its a free game. mobile and on switch. but you can spend money if you want to for cosmetics and stuff. The only money i spent on the game was with those gold coin thingys you get from switch when you buy a game in the store (this was a while ago. i think they stoped doing this) also i forgot what i spent the gems on but i have 20 left.

(Actually, there are many Veteran reals matches for ranked, according to some of my friends)

If you are interested....
The game is called Pokemon Unite.
It is available for mobile devices (phones & tablets) with Android or iOS, or how ever Switch users get their games.
For Android I got it from Google Play.
As for an actual "local library".... that confuses me.... so I have no clue what you mean by placing it on hold. This is a free downloadable game.

i think they thought it was a game that has a game card (not like mobile games)

It's true that I started Unite to be backup to my bff (irl) in ranked. However, she outranked me because she had started playing prior to when I did. I had to play catch-up. I did those on my own.
While playing on my own, I met others through the random matched solo queued ranked battles. If our play styles meshed, then we'd invite each other into additional battles using the "recent teammates" tab in the lobbies. I've made many friends or battle buddies through ranked.
When my bff and I played quicks and casuals (different types of matches primarily for fun), we also did the same thing. We would be matched up with random people, play some rounds and if we all got along, we'd all end up being friends.
So my answer is, YES, you can most definitely play and have fun even if you start off playing by yourself.
Maybe during the beginning, just get to know the game, the various Pokemon available to you, play some of the solo battles, then start off in quicks and casuals before you go to ranked. You'll learn more that way and perhaps feel more confident going into a ranked match that way.
When you have a grasp of all the basics, then try ranked. Good luck!
Remember, to have a friend, you've got to be a friend

also you could play the offline mode so you can see which pokemon you like best
