Best gen

I'm a Gen 1 player but I don't consider it the best by a long shot. It's type chart is a glorified boondoggle and the starters are outclassed by other Pokemon. To me the title goes with Gen 5 since the amount of new Pokemon and attention to detail that most people won't notice. Gen 6 was outclassed by the Anime and that is saying something. When the games are outdone by a series meant to promote it but do a better job with secondary characters(Tierno, Trevor and Shauna specifically), something is inherently wrong.

Giving you friends with interests other than the Pokémon league was good in concept, but in execution it just made them boring. Trevor easily falls behind you on the Pokédex, despite that supposedly being his sole focus, and in a game without any dancing mechanics or elaboration on what being a dancer means in Kalos, Tierno's dancing focus becomes a meaningless one note character trait.

I totally agree. It’s okay to be a gen 1 fan, some of the Pokémon are amazing, but I do agree that genwunners (and variants) are a little toxic.
I’ve never played X/Y but they seemed pretty bad, the 3d graphics just don’t work with 2d mechanics and it seemed far too easy.

There is no inherent reason why 3D graphics cannot work with 2D world design. Gen 5 was essentially the inverse. Part of what makes XY disappointing is that it is a very linear 2D design that doesn't seem interested in taking advantage of its new 3D engine beyond gimmicks.
The ill-conceived open world is a bigger problem in modern Pokémon games, as they still try to slap a linear story and game progression into a world that supposedly promotes freedom and choice. Open world isn't universally better that linear. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. I'd rather play through a rich, well crafted linear world and story than a barebones one spread thin over an open world.
