I am surprised gen 6 is so high. Is that due to Kalos bias from Z-A? Or do people actually like the game?

Genwunners remain a potent force in the Pokémon customer base. They are people that haven't touched a game since maybe gen 2, or if they have they have played only to the extent to prove that "all these new games suck".
I am not talking about all gen 1 fans. There are plenty of people who love gen 1 (I am one of them), some even hold it up as their favourite, but they are perfectly willing to give other gens a fair shot. I am specifically talking about genwunners.
They will buy all of the nostalgia merchandise. That coupled with the rest of the fanbase who will also buy the same nostalgia merchandise, makes gen 1 a very tempting and profitable gen to revisit, which is why they keep revisiting it.
I think most people who are not the opposite end of the spectrum, that assumes old game = bad and have never touched gen 1, fairly rate gen 1 as a prominent game in the franchise as its foundation, but one with a lot of problems and room for improvement and innovation. It's fairly middle of the road as the whole franchise is concerned.
Not bad, has its strengths. But definitely not the peak of the series.
I honestly think that XY are the worst 3DS games. They were Gamefreak's first, flawed attempt at 3D Pokémon, they were saddled with the stupid "glassesless 3D" gimmick that strained an already struggling engine and I think the majority of players never turn on anyway, the narrative was boring, it introduced the controversial exp share I despise so very much (but at least you could turn it off then), and it was full of the aforementioned genwun pandering, probably to get millennials to buy the floundering 3DS.
I do not wish to be reductive and I am willing to hear its fans out, but honestly my cynical assumption is that it is now old enough that nostalgia has glossed over all its flaws, or those young enough to play it as their first Pokémon now revere it and defend it online.
