Nickname Tropes

So I was wondering, do any of you have any tropes you follow when nicknaming certain Pokemon?

Personally I have these three:

  1. I name all my Sirfetch'ds and Farfetch'ds after ducks from Migration (a random movie), as the names actually fit quite well.
  2. I name most of my dragon types after DracoMenace's (a Showdown youtuber) several accounts (seriously they have way too many accounts).
  3. If I can I will name a Pokemon with a matching species after a charcter from Smoke and Flame (my PMD fanfiction).

All of my first Charizards are Char

First Cinderace is Bundles (named my first Scorbunny that)

Pikachu is Pi for my first and Chu for my second

Sceptile is Scepteal (I used to pronounce it that way)

Absol is Sol if male and Abby for female

    Bipoger is Ogerpon

My favorite name I've ever done is BURNIN'BABY! for my Scarlet Talonflame

I probably have more but these are the first ones that come to mind

I generally don’t nickname my Pokémon but if I do, I generally name them after Greek, Roman, Norse or Celtic gods. Beira is derived from the Celtic goddess of Winter, a perfect depiction of a Snow Warning Alolan Ninetales if I’ve ever seen one. Also Sylveon is either Baal(male) because it’s the Lord of Destruction or Artemis since she’s the closest Greek Goddess with respect to Fairies. I could probably derive other nicknames but that’s where I draw mine from because Pokémon are in a way gods themselves.

I always name my cyndaquil's and nidoran's buddy cause tradition, every time I get a new Yveltal from Y I name it like Y#, and every time I get a Lucario from Korrina in X/Y I name it Luke the #rd.

I never used to bother with nicknames as a kid. I do now, but I don't tend to do them on first playthroughs because I am struggling enough to learn the names of all the new Pokémon without adding my own dumb memes.

But when I do go for nicknames, it will often be references to things I am into at the time, things I feel are thematic for the Pokémon or things that would make better names for the Pokémon than their official one.

I feel not calling Zebstika "Zapidash" was a missed opportunity, for example.

References to my longtime favourite franchises are a common source of names. Novels, movies, other video games, etc.

Often mine are references and just how I feel about them. Cinder the Cinderace is because that's what I named him in my first ever run, Whisper the Absol is a reference to Whisper the Wolf, Vera (Sylveon) means 'truth' or something I forgot, Katniss the Decidueye is pretty obvious, Tidal the Tatsugiri has to do with tidal wave, and then Spark the Raichu had some reasoning but I forgot.

I don't nickname mine often either, but if I do, they're usually inside jokes / references or names of my friends / family members. I try to make them funny!
