What’s your go-to team-building strategy when starting a new game?
When you fire up a brand-new Pokémon save file, do you already have a plan… or are you just winging it?
Some people carefully build a type-balanced team from the very first route. Others grab their favorites no matter what the weaknesses look like. So what’s your approach?

When I first played Yellow as a teen, I had a pre-determined plan back then and have had that same philosophy since. I always plan my teams around the region's Dex and namely what their "alternatives" happen to be compared to the regional starters. It's partly what makes Infernape so good because if you look at the alternatives in Diamond/Pearl, there really aren't any(Ponyta is it for a Fire type and with Fighting… even those options are limited).

I usually have a type balanced team in my saves, usually one fire type (starter), one grass/electric, one water type (for surf/waterfall/dive), one flying type (for fly), one ground type (for dig/rock punch), and one wild card.

I kind of choose the ones I really want and catch nothing else. This has lead me right into trouble sometimes…

Definitely improvising, but more with my favourites than coherent typing. Because of forced EXP Share and always-accessible Boxes, I've expanded my team from 6 Pokémon to a rotating team of 12, aiming to keep all of their levels equal.

I don't really have a plan most of the time, I usually just take my starter and some early-game Pokémon, and never switch up my party after the first few areas.
