I've never seen anyone message via chat that word in Unite. It may be a local thing with the friends you have or play with. I am sorry, I do not know.

Maybe you should chat back the next time with words ( if you can) and ask them what that's all about.

Or you can use the sticker (aka the Pokemon icons such as a happy venasuar, a goodnight eevee, an eevee with love hearts, a stomping exclamation and question mark charizard, a slowbro question mark, a thank you eevee, etc), yes sticker is the generally accepted term for those cartoon icons that can be used in lobby and individual chats. Anyways maybe you should use the slowbro question mark sticker when they type the word sticker in.

I'm assuming if you can read the word "sticker" in lobby chat, then you also have access to typing in lobbies, not everyone does. Those that can't type, due to age restrictions, parental controls, or guest account usage, cannot see nor type back and communicate via quick chats (preset words/messages) and stickers (pokemon icons). Those who can see typed words but can't type back are typically people who have had temporary chat bans for whatever reason.

I have no clue if this all is what you meant, but I hope it helps!

(BTW, if what they are saying to you IS what you think, maybe it's time to find new battle buddies and friends.)
