Which 3DS or DS Pokémon games should I start with?
I got a 3DS earlier this year, but haven't gotten any games for it just yet. Which Pokémon games for it do you think I should play first?

I've heard X/Y and ORAS are the most popular 3DS games, as for DS games, I'd say any of the Gen 5 games, that is if you can afford them.

If you can, I recommend playing through the DS games. Easily the peak of the franchise. Start with Platinum, then HGSS, then BW and its sequel.

I would say play Red or Blue over Yellow, because it is a different experience. But playing through gen 1 in some form is worth experiencing if you haven't before.
Similarly I would give Crystal a try if you can, but I think HGSS is a better replacement for GSC than FRLG for RBY.
I guess the only gen you would be missing on the 3DS is gen 3. On the plus side, you would miss gen 3.
But yes, if you can RBY>HGSS>Platinum>BW>BW2 would be my recommended order, assuming no access to other platforms.

You wont be able to afford any of the DS games, start with XY for 3DS. If you insist about starting with a DS title then get Platinum.

If only there was a way to play the DS games without buying expensive second hand copies. Sadly Nintendo offer no options on their official firmware.
