Is there a point where you don't need approval anymore?
I'm not sure how to get a mod's attention without being too annoying but I've been 5 stars for quite a bit now, am fairly active, and don't recall posting anything that could be considered remotely inappropriate.
It gets kinda annoying when I'll be trying to have a conversation and there's a 50/50 of my post/comment going through the first time, and there isn't even a pattern to it - sometimes it needs approval, sometimes not.
Heck, I don't even know if this will need approval!

I think duration on the Forum and/or Post count are the actual factors for approval going away as opposed to points(aka 5-stars). I could be wrong though but I think the cut-off is 1k posts/comments.

Yup, he still has to go through approval.
I was 5 stars and had to go through approval until I asked a specific mod nicely to help me with it. Maybe if they aren't too busy they can help you both out?

Definitely the join date and number of posts, but also if you or the thread are flagged... or if the post was caught by the bad words filter.

I haven't had a post held in over a year. It's possible they changed some flagged words or phrases that my posts used to trigger which yours still do. I think the "Freak" part of Game Freak used to trigger it. Presumably the restricted words list would have been inherited from the generic forum software they use, with little awareness of the fact the word "freak" is less likely to be used as an insult in this context, since they're the company that make the games.
Given that this is a family friendly forum, I suspect they would have chosen the highest level of safety a generic software might offer when setting up the forum, and that would include a strict restricted or flagged words list. They may have refined it and taken words off the list as time went on.
Or maybe there is some manual whitelist or blacklist for users that they are added to when they are proven trustworthy after a time, or post certain content.
Perhaps it is tied to a certain account age, post count and/or user level. But those things all naturally increase as time goes on with normal account usage, so it's no definitive proof that one or any of them are a factor.
Whatever qualifications one needs, I doubt any mod will tell us what they are lest people start gaming the system. If it's post count, people would start spamming. If it's points, people will start begging for "likes". If it's account age, people might try to buy older accounts. And so forth.
My advice would be to simply post meaningful content in a civil manner. Eventually it seems your posts will stop being held. Just be patient and don't try to game it.

Duration on the Forum could be another factor but I doubt it. Honestly I wish they'd just do away with it but I think it's a protection mechanism for Bots.
