Retro game question

I started playing my dad's copy of yellow because I accidentally deleted his save file when I was 5 or 6 (I have learned and apologize for my mistake). I temporarily stopped playing for a few minutes, yes I saved, but when I started it again there was no continue option. I think it may be the cartridge battery so if anyone could help me I would be very greatful.

"Dad's copy"? Excuse me while I crumble to dust.

Game Boy cartridges use a watch battery to keep power in memory and preserve the save file. If power has already run out then the save file has been lost, but you can restore save functionality by replacing the battery.

To do so you will need a special 3.8mm Gamebit screwdriver to open the case and a new CR2025 battery (I think. Double check that.). It is also recommended that you use a soldering iron to remove and then resolder the battery in place.

You can sometimes get away with squeezing the old battery out and pushing the new one in, but this can bend and damage the contacts, so I would advise against it.

Soldering may seem a little daunting at first if you've never done it, but I promise you it is very easy. Look up YouTube videos online if you are unsure. Some of them specifically demonstrate this very procedure.

    Best of luck with it.
