I’m old. I graduated from Elementary to Middle school in 98 and during that summer, Pokemon took off to where people were playing it at school. Be it Red/Blue on Gameboy or the Trading Card game, it was an active part of school life(Yes, I saw an OG Charizard card that is expensive. A Pikachu card just sold for $16.5 million). I got Yellow in 99 not long after it came out and I still own it. Friend down the street had Blue and later got Gold so I got a taste of Generation 2 before going into a long dormant run until this past Xmas when I got a Switch 2 and Scarlet + Z-A. Meaning I missed out on playing Gens 3-8 but I don’t feel like I missed much given the Anime and YouTube.

But it was a great time to grow up with Pokémon! Pokémania was everywhere, you couldn't escape it.
I've actually published a lot of the memories from Pokémon fans who grew up during this time, in a newsletter I write, and reading their stories has been great. It was a very special time.2 -

I received Pokémon Red for its UK release. I was supposed to get it for my birthday a little later, but my mum gave it to me early. I also ended up getting Blue and Yellow after that.
Despite Pokémania already waning a little, especially given that my year had just graduated primary school at the time and some of my friends had decided they were already "too old and mature for Pokémon" having reached the ripe old age of eleven and starting secondary school, I persuaded my mum to get me Silver at launch and played alongside a younger neighbour who bought Gold.

If memory serves me well(sometimes it don't but I think it works somewhat), my initial or first team I had on Yellow was the first 6 Ash had or Pikachu, Pidgeot, Butterfree + Kanto Starters. Taught Butterfree Flash, Pidgeot Fly, Venusaur Cut, Blastoise Surf and Strength to Charizard to get through the game. Butterfree eventually got Psychic TM and Blastoise Ice Beam because I learned at school you needed Ice specifically for Lance. I don't recall the Mew Truck rumor but I do remember the Missingno glitch for R/B.
