ZA Campaign and Thoughts
I started ZA recently after having pretty much wrapped up 100% Dex on Scarlet(just a few loose ends or Trades to do). To be fair I've only scratched the surface given I'm Rank W but so far so good. I opted to go with Totodile, who's now a Feraligatr at level 30. Could have sworn he doesn't reach the final form until level 36 but maybe they changed things for this game. Doesn't look like Abilities are in this game either, but what do I know. I'm up to 60 species on the Dex with the rest of my team, so far, consists of Braixen(Fennekin special mission tugs at your soul), Ivysaur(eh might as well grab one), Flaffy(kind of OP this early), Sylveon(Eevee was a ROYAL PAIN TO CATCH!!!) and Honedge(haven't used him much but he's there. Probably will replace him with Froslass when I get around to it… I love its Mega). Also plan to replace Flaffy with a Ground type since I've always liked having one. Will either be Excadrill, Krookodile or Garchomp if I can get my hand on one(eventually).
For initial character reactions, I generally don't do these until the end but eh might as well. Taunie(or Urbain if you opted to go as Female Trainer) is an interesting character. Taunie is giving me some Shauna vibes considering she hasn't really been a rival so far like Calem/Serena were in the XY games. Will likely change though since there's the whole issue with Emma that hasn't been revealed yet. Lida is definitely this game's version of Tierno and a far better battler too and I expect her to have the OP Mega Starmie at some point. Naveen is… well… Naveen. Very reserved but also, kind of an irrelevant character so far. Might play a bigger role later on but so far he's kind of an afterthought. AZ is just there right now. May play a role but might not. Mable has been quite helpful with the TM's that have saved my bacon against the early Trainers but also against the Alpha's. Emma looks to have inherited the role from Looker but one wonders if we'll get a cameo by Anabel at some point.
Speaking of Alpha's… whoever thought this was a wise decision to put in glowing red eye Pokémon that are the precursor to nightmares may want to rethink their business direction given their target audience are 6-13 year olds. If not met during Side Missions, they also spawn when you catch all Pokémon in a given Wild Zone, which catches new players such as myself by surprise. Had to read up on what the difference is and that they're basically higher-level Pokémon with unique moves, three perfect IV's(random) and high EV's(including a fat helping in HP), which make them incredibly bulky and tough to bring down. Competitively, they're great and are a sure bet to clear the main story line if you catch, level and evolve these menaces.

DON'T DISRESPECT NAVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!
Literally my favorite character in this game since the moment I met him!
I want to here no more disrespect from you!
Okay, but I hope you're enjoying and I look forward to updates!
Also, random thing, I feel about Lida how you feel about Naveen
An after thought and unimportant

To be fair, early game Naveen doesn't do much. But wait until you meet Canari. (Also, Canari just lets me walk into her room uninvited now. I wish I could rematch her though… or at least some kind of side quest.)

En Janthine or whatever her name is probably takes the cake for the worst Pokemon character of all time.

It's Banette but yeah Ghost Pokémon in general can scare the living bleep out of you. Adding Red Eyes only makes it worse. Yet I see and raise you Alpha Houndoom. THAT is nightmare fuel right there, particularly if you're not expecting it whatsoever like my first venture into Wild Zone 6.

Campaign Update: So I did a late night session and got to Rank V. The V promotion match just had to utilize the darn Monkeys. Seriously we don't need a reminder of those Unova early-game easy mode Pokémon because all they need to dominate is an Evolution stone. Even though they were evolved, my Feraligatr is built to cover his weaknesses with Ice Fang + Dig. Yet I didn't risk it by swapping to Braixen and the Grass Monkey fell relatively fast with Psyshock doing some serious damage(I'm coming to love this TM…). Against the Water monkey, Ivysaur dispatched him in no time flat, although I really need to get him a Poison move… the sheer lack of Fairy coverage on my team is concerning. Against the Fire Monkey, my starter steamrolled it with Bubblebeam and a Dig finisher.
Afterwards, I was not expecting Zygarde and a Mega Evolution fight that was basically a trial by fire tutorial. Then they go and give you an Absol with its Mega Stone… I mean I do like Absol but I wasn't planning on using one despite the fact it'd give me valuable anti-Psychic coverage(and Kadabra or Alakazam is no joke). Also, what's the deal with AZ giving me a Lucario to use. Aren't Lucario pretty stubborn or won't fight with just any Trainer? What's next… an appearance from Korrina? At least I wasn't gifted this one so that's a positive. Next main mission is battling Vinnie and jumping all the way to Rank F? Seriously? What about the rest of the Alphabet? Don't they deserve some time in the spotlight or do letters G through U mean absolutely nothing? Why call it Z-A if they don't even utilize the entire Alphabet… smh
Once I finish this main mission though, I'll finally have a use for those Mega Shards. Going to farm them ad nauseum and Power level my squad. For the rest of the Dex, I might go and purposely catch Alpha's of each species(shiny or not). Oh and I wish I had done the Mystery Gifts when I had started because a Ralts with a Mega Stone is kind of nice. If I wasn't intent on using Delphox and Sylveon, I may very well have used it. Also, the Side Missions for Diancie and Mewtwo… smh. I mean yeah I have to unlock them but still… Definitely makes me reconsider using a Dark Type on the latter one.

I have no idea who you mean. Janthine…?

I'll probably find out soon enough. Probably some character that drove them nuts or something along those lines. Trying not to look them up out of curiosity right now.

Campaign Update: More grinding but wanted to update everyone on the Team, including Nicknames!!
First up we have Leatherhead the Feraligatr. Level 53 with Liquidation, Dig, Ice Fang and Crunch. Covers both weaknesses, although a bit slow and lumbering but hits like a truck.
Next, we have Brigid the Delphox. If you can guess where I got that from, cookie for you. She's level 53 with Psychic, Mystical Fire, Flamethrower and Shadow Ball. Don't really have anything to counter Dark Types but I don't plan on her being out there for those. I suppose I could teach her Dazzling Gleam given I got the TM for it.
3rd up we have the rather difficult to spell(and pronounce) Achlys the Venusaur. Based around the God of Death, I figured it to be fitting with a Poison Typing. He's level 53 too with Sludge Wave, Power Whip, Synthesis and Protect. Might replace Protect with something else, although I'll probably need it later on in the game.
4th is Danu the Excadrill. Latest member and I figured having a Steel Type to be worthwhile. If Steelix wasn't a pain, I might consider him but since I don't have the Mega Stone yet for Excadrill, I gave it Soft Sand to boost its Earthquake. Rest of moveset is Metal Claw(really need a Steel move but Iron Head isn't available for me yet), Megahorn and Rock Slide.
5th is Baal the Sylveon. I would have named it something else if it was Female but of the seven Eevee's I've caught so far, five have been Male. What are the odds. I figured Lord of Destruction was a fitting name. I would have named it Aine if it were Female though. He's level 54 with Moonblast, Draining Kiss, Psyshock and Hyper Voice. Got nothing for Steel Types but he won't be out there if I can help it.
Last is going to be Maleficent the Froslass but I haven't gotten Snorunt yet(need Rank E to get its Wild Zone) and then the Dawn Stone is going to be a royal pain since the only Dawn Stone available is from a Side Mission that doesn't come about for awhile. As a placeholder, I got a level 46 Doublade that I intend to evolve into Aegislash once I acquire a Dusk Stone. It's got a pretty nice moveset of Sacred Sword(was flummoxed that it could learn it as a Honedge), Iron Head, Shadow Claw and Psycho Cut.
I should start rolling through the main story pretty quickly though given the level my Pokémon are at now. I don't really intend to Mega Evolve if I can help it but my team doesn't really have eligible candidates outside of my starter right now. Delphox's stone is limited to rank Battles(hence am using Wise Glasses to boost her Special Attacks), Venusaur's stone I haven't come across yet(hopefully soon… got a Miracle Seed placeholder), and Excadrill's isn't available yet(afaik). Sylveon can't Mega and neither can Aegislash but Froslass can once I get one. In lieu of Mega Evolving, I definitely intend to blast Plus moves from time to time after I read up on them a bit.
