Is this weird to say?
I think that starter trios make sense, but when two starters are put as a duo, it makes it feel better. The examples i can think of include Squirtle and Bulbasuar in Isle of Armor, Incineroar and Rillaboom in VGC, and Sobble, Drizzile, and Inteleon and Cinderace in Journeys. You could even say Litten and Rowlet in SM anime.
I think the greatest example is Charizard and Venusaur in FRLG but let me know what you think

No, youre crazy, go hug a Bewear
Nah, duos feel worse, especially when one just beats the other. Trios always make sure there's the potential for each member to be helpful.

Strictly from an Animé perspective, Kanto and Johto has all three together with Ash. Charmander and Chikorita were the only ones to evolve(Cyndaquil came later). Hoenn split them up amongst the Protagonists and kept that model for Gen 4 but Ash got all three in Unova before going back to their split model in Gens 6-9. You note Alola with the duo but that's because Lana had the other one. If she had a different Water type, Ash could have easily had all three again(or gave it to Lillie for reasons).

Wait... i think i know what you're talking about... yes!
Duos give a sense of imbalance though that feels more natural. Seeing a Bulbasuar, Charmander, and Squirtle all out in the wild at once feels weird and unnatural. It feels more natural to see two together. Yk?
