As someone who's been on the forums for around two years, I can definitely say that there's been a decrease in people over time. Though a lot of people have been joining recently.
You might also be referring to what happened more recently. Where two very active users were banned for most likely making some very innapropriate jokes.

I feel like if he did something too aggressive it was in a fighting thread, where a lot of us get aggressive and are still here
There was a post that Joey made that Thur was in on and when they got banned the post was removed
I believe it had something to do with that
