Well, I don't think I can blame them for making some things payable if the main game is free. I, personally, am not spending anything. I intend to work to make something good. But I really hope they don't make it like Unite's 'grind for a month for ONE LICENSE' that drives me batty. But if some people want to spend their money on things to just speed things up a little bit because they're just impatient, they can go ahead. I will be patient, earn my points, and train my Pokémon myself.

It took me a while to understand them but the game has the whole stat thing in a much more direct and visible fashion which is very helpful.

So, Pokémon have EVs and IVs.

First, IVs. These are randomly generated when you catch a Pokémon, like the nature and gender and ability and characteristic (that last one depends on the highest IVs, but that's not very relevant to explaining them). They used to be unchangeable, but they changed that to let you max them out starting in SM (there is no other value you can change them to, you can only max them out). They're a random number from 0 to 31, and the game hints at the number (but doesn't tell you what it is exactly, it just tells you the range it's in with the exception of zero IVs and perfect/31 IVs) through the Judge mechanic you can get through various methods.

You can think of them as a complex version of natures that differs from stat to stat and boosts them in randomly varying degrees (and, rarely, can be zero), and doesn't decrease one to boost another, but can't be seen by the player (even if you can boost them through Hyper Training, which just maxes them out. Also, zero IVs and perfect IVs have unique Judge text).

Now, EVs. Pokémon don't have EVs when they're first obtained, which is why people call them Effort Values. They're obtained from defeating Pokémon who are good at that stat (for example, defeating a Chansey gives you HP EVs and defeating a Pidgey gives you Speed EVs). You can have 252 EVs in one stat. And, so people strategise instead of maxing out every stat, only 510 total EVs that can be freely distributed across all six stats. Every 4 EVs obtained increase a Pokémon's stat by 1 point (meaning you can get 63 more points in two different stats by maxing out EVs and 1 point in a third one). Vitamins increase a Pokémon's EVs in the stat in the item's description by 10, and feathers do the same but can only increase them by 1 per feather.

You can see a graph of a Pokémon's EVs in their stat screen (it doesn't show numbers, but exact numbers don't matter for most strategies). If a stat's EVs have been maxed out, the stat's name glitters when checking them.

If you put EVs in the wrong stat and want to change them, there are various methods across all the games. The one that's present in the most is EV lowering berries (Grepa, Hondew, Kelpsy, Pomeg, Qualot, and Tamato berries), which decrease the stat in their desceiption's EVs by 10. To reset EVs completely, the methods differ from game to game and sometimes don't exist (usually making berries the only method in those). SV only got a quick EV reset method in the Teal Mask DLC, where you can use Fresh-Start Mochi to reset a Pokémon's EVs. In Z-A, they put a quick EV reset method in the base game, where you can go to the Rust Syndicate and the woman behind the counter will reset them in exchange for 5 Mega Shards.

I know how to look at them and increase them

I don't know how to properly use them

I understand this new format a lot better, though

This would've helped me a lot while I was trying to teach myself IVs and EVs…
