I need to try a reset hunt some time

basically before sword and shield (with the exception of the Regi’s in that game) all starters where not shiny locked meaning your first pokemon could be shiny and all games before gen 5 box arts where not shiny locked (with the exception being kyurem which was not) though them shiny locking all legendarys was quite recent since you could still shiny hunt old legendaries in sword shield through max dens same with usum in ultra space and oras through hoopa portals (also you can shiny hunt latias/latios just to do that shiny hunt you have to do a battle then catch it watch more cutscene then you can finally check it)

So in short reset hunts is when you shiny hunt for a static pokemon like legendary starters and gift pokemon where you save right before getting it then if it’s not shiny you reset your save to get another chance
