Not sure how accurate the statement actually is, but according to Professor Laventon, all pokemon are capable of shrinking their mass (Hence why they can be captured in Pokeballs) - so they all still count as Pocket Monsters….

So there are these things called Pokéballs...
All jokes aside, the reason Pokémon went with the Japanese fan abbreviation over the original name Pocket Monsters in the international market is that they were afraid of trademark issues with Monster in my Pocket.
