Unburden Sneasler with grassy seed?

So, i don't understand this at all. i gave sneasler the grassy seed to work with rillaboom when grassy serge is set up with the unburden ability. however, the ability says that "It raises Speed if a held item is used."
But when the item is used, unburden don't trigger. am i missing something or am i using this guy wrong? please explain, thank you.

This is what you're combination should do: While Grassy Seed's primary effect is to boost Defense, it's the loss of the item that triggers Unburden. The fact that the seed is consumed upon Grassy Terrain activation is what makes this strategy viable.
