New Sorting and Filtering Options for Each Forum

I have noticed that each forum now has "sort" and "filter" options at the top of the topic listings. The filter by default seems to list all topics, but the sort option defaults to "hot", and reverts to it when you leave the page without preserving the last setting.
What makes a thread "hot"? The number of posts? Reactions to the posts? How frequently people post in it? Some combination of these criteria?
These forums are not very busy and do not typically get a lot of new threads per day, but I am concerned that certain topics may get buried by the new sorting if they are not "hot" enough.
Could we perhaps make "new" the default option? Or allow users to set their preferred sorting order for individual forums, and the entire forum.

I think it's kind of weird and don't understand why sorting was added, since there's really no need or want for it. I think they should've at least made "new" the default option though.

But defaulting to hot might push newer threads outta sight.

"hot" sorting seems to be the same default of listing threads by most recent reply, like it was before
"new" sorting lists threads in order the thread/first post was made instead.
"top" sorting seems to sort by total number of positive Agree/Like/LOL reactions
filtering doesn't seem to be useful so far
overall i don't think this really changes much so far but it's something of note

Yes.
I agree with your assessment having played around with it further, but the naming does not seem very intuitive.
I had assumed "new" would put the threads with the most recent posts to the top, not simply the newest thread. "Hot" is really ambiguous, but does sound like the most desirable default closest to the previous sorting.
Is still think allowing us to set our own preferred sorting order would be a useful function.
