how does sleep work?

They flip a coin at the start and end of their turn? What if its heads on the second flip? Can they still act, essentially getting 2 opportunities per turn to wake up? Really?

You're half right. Pokemon can recover from Sleep during Pokemon Checkup, which happens in between turns. If Alice has Snorlax from Pokemon GO use its Collapse attack, it is Asleep at the end of her turn. Then Pokemon Checkup happens, so there is a chance it will wake up. If it doesn't wake up, then there will be another Pokemon Checkup after the other player's turn and before the Alice's next turn.

The player with a pokemon asleep flips a coin during checkup (in between turns) if heads, the pokemon wake up, if tails, the pokemon remains asleep, this continues every turn until the pokemon wakes up, is inflicted with paralisis or confusion (both overwrite sleep) or leaves the active.

if your pokemon falls asleep in your own turn, it has 2 chances to wake up before your next turn, if it happens during your opponent's turn, you only get 1 chance before your next turn.

Oh, so when they flip the second time, it is about to be my turn and even if it's heads, they wont be able to attack, right?
