awful match making
yesterday i was having fun playing in ranked not until i kept getting match make with players that i would lose even if they are somehow weak. not because of skill issues but it kept happening again and again idk what this game is up to, i have upgraded held items and everything but its now impossible for me to even win in ranked after ive reached veteran class rank

FYI: Held Items are important, but the level is not the most important factor. Anything above lvl 20 is negligibly better. However Choosing the right Item is Important, Sp. Attack Items on Attacker Pokemon does not help (for example Shell Bell on Cinderace)
What you also might have experienced is, that you will get a lot of Bot games in Ultra and below, the lower the rank the more bot games you might get (especially after a loss).
All in all, matchmaking is bad, no discussion there, but in your case you might need a bit more practice to win against humans :)1 -

Held items above LVL 20 only improve stats a tiny bit, compared to the enormous improvements of getting from 0 to 20. So getting to lvl 30 is just wasting held item enhancers.

It's true, you can improve your attack, def and even being able to dodge a lot of attacks by the items, emblems and move set you select.
I reccomend selecting 1 attacker, 1 defender and 1 all-rounder you like and just google best builds and set ups for them. This way you will see what works best for your play style and will help you decide on your move sets.
Match making system is horrible. It's the #1 ask from players but the devs have proven to be pretty stubborn and won't do anything to adjust it. So try to kill all wild pokemon fairly early in the game. Gives you a good advantage.
