V Guard Energy reducing damage before multiplying for weakness

Like the title suggests. I recently played a game against a Lugia V deck using Pikachu VMax. Max Ballon only hit for 260 instead of 290. It had 1 V guard energy attached and 3 powerful colourless energy. They were both gold versions of the card if that helps find the problem. I’ve had it before where it did the correct amount of damage, but they were different versions of the same card.
