I think the 3DS has this weird thing with the graphics of DS games when you play them where it merges the pixels together (I suppose to make them look more 'modern') so I would start with 3DS games.

I have a 3DS and I play DS games on it, and they look just like when I play them on my DS.

I have a DS lite and 3DS XL, on the DS lite the DS games actually looks better because of the smaller screen making the image look clearer. I guess it's another CRT vs modern screen type thing.

The DS Lite is displaying the games in their native resolution. 3DS attempts to scale them up and stretches the image.

Forgive me, it's been a while since I last played a DS game on 3DS. Isn't there a setting to display DS games in their native resolution on the 3DS? Or am I thinking of GBA games on the DS?

If you have a 3DSXL or another 3DS with a big screen it does make the pixels bigger but it doesn't merge them or put a filter on them. And I think it doesn't stretch them horizontally but I don't know if that depends on the kind of 3DS or if all of them keep the square screens like my n3DSXL/2DS/2DSXL do. Also, the extra space on the top screen that the 3DS doesn't use when playing DS games is just black, it doesn't have a fancy border.

Also this barely has anything to do with the other stuff I said in my comment but the 2DS is my favourite of the 3DS consoles. It does not have 3D and you can't open and close it like you can with all the other DSes and 3DSes, but it feels so comfy to hold it and play on it and the buttons are fun to press. The 2DSXL can open and close like the other DSes and 3DSes, and has lots of quality of life improvements from all the other 3DSes, but it does not have 3D (and also it's not as comfy to hold as the regular 2DS).
