Ya.

With people wanting more from games and technology advancing it can be difficult to keep up with what people want. We're do you stand on GameFreak making Pokemon on disc?

Surely it depends on the media Nintendo's console uses, right? Honestly I think we are moving away from physical media in the future. Games will either become glorified rentals or subscription services like Netflix.

You will own nothing and you will be happy.

Optical discs have longer loading times. In the past their main advantage was storage capacity, but now you can get 1TB+ flash storage. I think discs are dying a death, sadly. Mind you, they do decay and only last a few decades anyway.

What happens when Nintendo (or whoever manages your online gaming marketplace) decide to remove your access to your games because they want you to buy the new version, because you posted wrongthink on the internet, or they simply can't be bothered to support it?

Or updates it in a way you didn't like; adding content you don't want or removing content you did?

With a physical game, it is harder for them to take it away from you. They would have to physically go into your residence and take it. Property rights are more robust in this regard, having existed for centuries.

Digital content is still relatively new, and lacks consumer protection. Digital downloads are files on company servers. They can do what they like on their own servers.

You think they can't do that? Have you ever read the terms and conditions for these services? They have the right to take anything they want from you on a whim.

And you just clicked "accept". Because you just wanted to play the video game.

You think I am hyperbolic and doomsaying? To that I say, go download something on the Wii U or 3DS eShop.

Pokemon on cartridge is fine, seems like the franchise was destined to remain on it. I did a google search and the max game size that could fit on a switch cartridge is 32 gigs, most standard micro sd cards are over 100 gigs anyway so cartridges are the way to go.
