What's the reason for banning/removing so many cards?

I played on the older version and had so many more cards to choose from and now I have some pre-builts and some boosters I recently bought. And even the ones that did make it over the platform switch, I find it questionable on what's illegal in standard and what isn't. What criteria are they going by?

They’re going by rotation, every year a certain number of sets is “rotated” out (back in the old days this took a bit of guesswork, now it’s basically everything with a certain regulation mark) of the Standard format and those cards can only be used in Expanded.

For example, last year everything with “D” regulation mark was rotated out of Standard and that basically led to everything between Sword & Shield and Vivid Voltage (as far as main sets are concerned, special sets are a bit tricky) that wasn’t reprinted with an E regulation mark or later being moved from Standard to Expanded. This year everything with an E regulation mark that hasn’t been reprinted with an F mark or later will move from Standard to Expanded come April 5th.

As far as Expanded’s concerned that hasn’t changed much as far as what’s legal is concerned (all Black & White-on cards, barring certain cards on the ban list, are legal) but the main issue is that it’s being added to the game in blocks. Right now TCG Live only supports a Sun & Moon-on Expanded format.
