In pokemon Y I had just defeated the elite then went to get mewtwo and didn't save it so I ended up fainting it so I had to redo the elite.

I encountered a Shiny Hawlucha. (Forgot to save)

    Then accidentally killed it. Sigh.

Also, in my top four match at a regionals I forgot to move my pidgeot ex out of the active, instead attacking with it, causing my opponent to knock it out and win the game. (IK that sounds like a really stupid mistake, but trust me, it had been a long weekend.

When I was in Synchro Mode, and found a shiny Chinchou way too far from my character. The worst thing was that this was easily avoidable. First shiny fail.

And then, on the day of the Super Bowl, which was 2 weeks after my FIRST EVER shiny fail, I ended up despawning a shiny Skwovet. I was actually going insane, trying to convince myself "Nah, that was just a Maschiff." even though the colors are completely different.

    (Other than Sword and Shield?)

When I discovered Game Boy cartridges used battery backed memory.

@TheJeffers you mean you had to keep the Game Boy FULLY CHARGED or it would lose the memory.

@Michael629303 I am talking about the little power cells in the cartridge. When they died, I lost my save.

Keeping the Game Boy on indefinitely would have preserved the save, but I used disposable batteries. These days I know how to backup my save and replace the battery, but I was heartbroken when I booted up Silver to find the save blank. I didn't know it was even a thing that could happen.

Realising I actually have to train all my Pokémon in games before XY, and I can't just go through every fight with only my overleveled starter and maybe the Legendary.

It makes the playtime I have by the time I finish the game go from the expected 20-30 in newer games to 60-something. It's even worse outside of Unova, since it's not as easy to find a Chansey as it is to find an Audino.
