"Item" might creep people out. Maybe say Pokéball? I think it sounds a lot more friendly (hopefully). Also, "you must be a starter, 'cause I wanna choose you." is a good one I think.
I don't really think much about this kinda stuff and in return don't know a lot about it.

Anyway would anyone even have a positive reaction to a Pokémon one? Don't a lot of people think it's just a kids' game?
I don't mean to sound so negative, but wouldn't a lot of people even find you cringe? These would probably rarely work on anyone who doesn't like Pokémon. Most of the population doesn't play or watch it, even if they know Pikachu and Charizard.
