New Sound Type
🔊 Sound Type Pokémon
Attack
2× Super Effective
Water 💧, Steel ⚙️
Water: Sound travels very well through water, so Sound-type attacks would be especially effective against Water Pokémon. This also gives Water a new weakness and helps keep the type from being too dominant.
Steel: Sound can create powerful vibrations and resonance in metal, making Steel especially vulnerable to Sound attacks. This gives Steel’s incredible defensive typing another weakness without completely destroying what makes it good.
⸻
½× Not Very Effective
Rock 🪨, Grass 🌿, Flying 🪽, Fairy 🧚
Rock: Sound doesn’t affect solid rock very well, since vibrations are much harder to disrupt or penetrate through dense rock.
Grass: Plants aren’t affected by sound in the same way animals are, so Sound-type attacks wouldn’t be as effective against Grass Pokémon. This also gives Grass another useful resistance.
Flying: Many Flying Pokémon, especially birds, rely heavily on sound for communication. Because they’re so accustomed to sound, Sound-type attacks wouldn’t affect them as much.
Fairy: Fairy Pokémon have a natural connection to music, singing, and magical sounds. Because of this connection, Fairy Pokémon would naturally resist Sound-type attacks, creating an interesting relationship between the two types.
⸻
0× Completely Immune
Bug 🐛
Bugs are extremely sensitive to vibrations and sound, and many species use sound and vibrations to communicate, find mates, warn others, or navigate their environment.
Because of this, Bug Pokémon would be completely immune to Sound-type attacks.
This would give Bug its first type immunity and create a unique reason to use Bug Pokémon against Sound Pokémon.
⸻
Defense
2× Weak To
Bug 🐛, Flying 🪽
Bug: Bugs thrive around vibrations and sound, making them especially effective against Sound Pokémon.
Flying: Many Flying Pokémon, especially birds, rely heavily on sound and communication. Their familiarity with sound would allow them to use it against Sound Pokémon.
⸻
½× Resists
Water 💧, Fairy 🧚, Dark 🌑
Water: Sound travels through water differently than it does through air, allowing Sound Pokémon to naturally dampen the impact of Water-type attacks.
Fairy: Fairy Pokémon are naturally connected to music, singing, and magical sounds, so sound on top of sound wouldn’t be very affective.
Dark: Sound can represent music, communication, expression, and even things that help overcome fear and intimidation. Because Dark is strongly associated with fear, intimidation, and psychological attacks, Sound Pokémon would be naturally resistant to Dark-type attacks.
⸻
Overall
The goal of the Sound type is to give some weaker or underused types more opportunities while also giving stronger types some new counterplay.
Offensively, Sound is strong against Water and Steel, but struggles against Rock, Grass, Flying, Fairy, and especially Bug.
Defensively, Sound is weak to Bug and Flying while resisting Water, Fairy, and Dark.
Most importantly, Bug gets a completely new immunity, giving the type a unique niche and a natural counter to Sound Pokémon.
Sound would have a clear identity without having an overwhelming number of advantages: it can punish certain powerful defensive types, but several types can reliably switch into it or threaten it back.
