It is a shame that popularization due to tourists (tourists in the sense that they are basically visiting the hobby and aren't really there because they are passionate) ruined the market for it, which does make sense as there was a pretty large surge maybe a decade or so ago. I have considered learning Japanese for being able to understand these games but I already have enough languages I need to learn plus limited time, the undubs will have to do for now for me. But man you got some wicked deals, I one day hope to be able to go to Japan and get some stuff like that, I am mostly interested in stuff like collectors edition consoles cause Japan got some exclusive OG Xboxes only sold there and they are pretty sweet. Hopefully the market will recover with people not buying as much from these price gouged resellers.

Xbox has always been in a peculiar spot here. Japanese developers mostly stuck with Japanese consoles, but there were a few that jumped ship. Most prominently Team Ninja. And a few shocking shifts from exclusivity, like Square Enix going from almost entirely Sony exclusive to releasing on 360. FFXIII was perhaps the most prominent, but Nier got its own westernised version (the original Japanese story was brother/sister not father/daughter).

The 360 had a bit of traction, but XBox essentially became a non-entity from the XBOne onwards. Even more so than in the west. Like, tripple digit weekly sales.

In terms of buying exclusive OG Xboxes today it's hard to say. I don't think there's a lot of demand for them, but I don't think many people bought them either. It is quite rare to see a regular black OG Xbox, never mind alternative versions.

You might have some luck in the big cities like Tokyo or Osaka, but equally they are most likely to have been picked up by tourists.

Super Potato is your best bet, but it also charges a premium. You might get lucky in a random Book Off or Hard Off, but they are more general in their second hand goods. Mandarake is good for collectibles of all kinds and do sell video games, but that might be too specific and not really what they specialise in.

These days, I find buying online from Mercari or Yahoo Auctions yields the best results, but you will either need a third-party intermediary or a seller prepared to ship it abroad to get it. Plus I imagine the international shipping on an XBOX HUEG will be pretty pricey.

There are like 3 or so og xboxes made specifically for Japan, like the Kasumi translucent blue xbox and the clear xbox. Maybe I can get lucky and find one of those. The Xbox One as a whole was just underwhelming but that entire generation was underwhelming, that is the Wii U generation after all. I actually do own something else that is an oddity, a Japanese Xbox controller which later on was used in the west as the controller design to replace the duke.
