You can find me preaching the good word of our lord and saviour, gen 5, throughout these forums. I have gone into extensive detail about how I consider it the peak of the 2D Pokémon games, and Pokémon games in general.
A story with more nuance than your typical Pokémon game, that toys with the morality of the series core mechanic (and then confirms that you are perfectly justified to capture fantasy animals and force them into battle because they were never going to condemn that, but it's something). And takes the bold step of showing authority figures within the world actually intervening in a crisis rather than assuming "the kid who got their first Pokémon 20 hours ago will handle it."
The best spritework, fantastic music, and the ambition to design an entirely original regional Pokédex and restrict you to it, renewing the sense of discovery where players might have been falling into the habit of catching the same old team every game.
It's not perfect, of course. The region is an oval, it sadly did not continue the beloved follow Pokémon mechanic after HGSS just brought it back from Yellow, the aforementioned non-committal to its own narrative premise... I could probably come up with more if I thought about it. I am not claiming Gamefreak put out a flawless game here. I am the last person to claim that.
I will be eternally disappointed that it happened to come out during a lull in the series' popularity, which may have led Gamefreak to abandon a lot of gen 5's conventions in favour of nostalgia baiting in XY. (The games are blue and red, here's your Kanto starter, go catch Mewtwo, etc.)

To be honest after thinking about it for a while I don't have a favorite generation. Each generation did certain things very well while having its quirks that it would be very hard to pin it on one generation and say "I love that the most". I like all of the pre-switch generations a lot and have fond memories of them.

Wrong! Gen 8 is the best. Not only introducing the best region, but also introducing PLA an awesome game, which I am currently trying to get to Arceus in.
