CHAPTER 1 of the Smash Bros. Story with no name yet!
SONIC
Well, crud.
Last thing Sonic remembered, he was doing just fine. Fighting off badniks, trying to find Eggy before he did whatever his next scheme was. Then something blew up white in his face, and now…
He’s hanging upside down from a frickin’ palm tree.
Sonic snaps the branch that’s tickling his nose and spin-dash-flips his way back to solid ground. Looks like a forest of palm trees. Are those supposed to happen…?
“Uh, Tails?” His watch is just static. A lot of button-pressing later, he just punts it away. Well, it’s useless now.
“Alright, let’s just think here. This was probably Eggy. Maybe it was, like, Chaos Control, or…” Sonic stomps. “Guh, I’m not the thinker! This is Tails’ job. I’ll just… take a look around!”
Sonic zips off. Even pushing himself close to Mach 1, there’s nothing but endless palm trees and grass. He turns around to look at the path behind him. “Holy crud, this just goes on and on…” he bounces off the next tree to his left, launching himself to the top of the tree. He views the surroundings from his leafy vantage point. Left, trees. Straight ahead, trees. Behind him, trees, Right, trees, and some kind of broken-down tower. It resembles a giant building, and all the lights make him think of the Casino Forest in Mystic Jungle.
“Maybe that’s where I am. Doesn’t look like any part of the jungle I’ve ever seen, but its good a guess as any.” He bolts off toward the tower.
A small, yellow, furry creature is sucking all the light from the tower. Electricity zips from the lights to its glowing cheeks. It cries out, sucking up more and more power. Its lightning bolt shaped tail embeds itself in the ground, and it finishes. Sonic watches it all in shock. What on Mobius is that thing…? Its turns around and scratches a pointy ear with a back leg, and in its mouth, is a green glimmering Emerald. Sonic pumps his fist. “Score!” He walks out toward the creature. “Hey, there!” It looks up at him and starts backing away. Sonic steps closer. “If you don’t mind, I’m just gonna…” His hand zips toward the Emerald, moving so fast it’s a blur of blue that should snagged the Emerald in an instant. Instead, lightning strikes the creature and shocks him. “YOW!” He leaps back, his hand smoking. The creature cries out again and jumps onto all four. Electricity jumps between its cheeks and the Emerald, transitioning from yellow to green. Sonic shakes himself off. “Oh so THAT’s how you wanna play it… you’re on, bolt-butt!”
“PIKA!” It cries, sending a bolt of electricity at the hedgehog. He ducks down and spin-dashes into the critter. He shakes himself off. “Let’s dance!”
The creature vanishes in a flash of light, moving at a speed that impresses even Sonic. He dodges the quick attack just in time and swings up a foot to send the yellow creature flying up. He jumps off a spring, catching the critter midair with another spin dash. Then kicks it down. It slams into the foliage, crying out in pain. Sonic zips down to try to stomp on it, but a bolt of lightning cuts him off, making him come crashing down next to the yellow furball, which charges its tail with electricity and swings it into him like a lightning baseball bat. Sonic flies back into a tree, groaning. “Holy crap, you’re a tough critter…” The little yellow bolt zips forward again, but Sonic’s fist flies out and punches it across the face. It flies across the grass, and Sonic flips the Chaos Emerald in his smoking hand. “Nice- ow -try, furball, but this thing’s mine!”
BRAID
The door is locked.
THE DOOR IS LOCKED!!!
Calm down, idiot! Braid slaps herself on the cheeks, trying to stop herself from turning into a squid from her anxiety. Okay, just… break the doors. She agrees with the voice in her head and delivers a flying kick to the door.
“OWWW!!!” She flails around on the floor, holding her foot. “CLAMMIT! Stupid, stupid, stupid! At least I don’t have any bones to break…” She glares at the door. “Okay. Okay, I’ll just use my weapons!”
Splattershot- it doesn’t work so well. Even throwing it at the door results in nothing.
Inkbrush- even worse. She flails it wildly for nothing, only a yellow painted door.
Blaster- She only succeeds in knocking herself into a pile of boxes. “HOLY SHRIMP!!!”
By the time she reaches the last of her weapons, she’s out of ink, surrounded by yellow splatters and various Turf War weapons, and still presented with a locked door. She picks up her gear and squids into an ink puddle. “How am I gonna get out of here now…?” She finally decides to actually take a look around. It looks like an… arcade? No, a casino. She picks herself out of the ink. She goes to inspect some slot machines when a bunch turn on behind her. She whips around just in time to see something bound away, having turned all the levers on the machines as it went. Braid yells after it, “Hey! Wait up!” But by then, she can’t even see it anymore. “Fish,” she sighs. Suddenly, the slot machines all ding! She turns around to see one presenting three red 7s in a row. The second she walks over to inspect, coins pour out from the machine. They don’t look like Inkling cash- instead, gold coins with lines in the middle. When she picks one up, all the lights turn back on. Braid jumps. “Wh-what in the-”
A black, hairy figure bursts from the floor, and fire splays around him. “IIINCREDIBLE! What an astounding win you’ve just made, little…” he squints. His eyes are yellow and red, and there’s horns on his head. “…um, miss!”
“Uh, I didn’t win, it was-”
“Nonsense! All these coins are yours! Why not play some more, eh? Push your luck! You’re already one lucky little lady!”
“I’m a squid.”
“…well, then, you’re one lucky little squid!”
“And I’m trying to tell you, I didn’t do it! A weird looking creature jumped on all the levers and apparently won one of them!”
“Hm…” the giant hairy thing looks around. Ew. Hair. Braid tries not to barf and definitely not to touch it. “And where is this little critter now?” Suddenly, a burst of stars hit the back of his head. “OWWW! What in tarnation-”
A little fox-like creature lands next to Braid. It has brown fur, and a bushy tail. Braid had only ever read about foxes. She thought they were totally extinct. It cries, “Voi-oi!” at the hairy creature. The black thing seems to recognize the fox. “YOU AGAIN?! I thought I had YOU all locked up in Inkwell Hell!”
Braid isn’t nearly as grossed out by the fur of the fox than the hair of the looming black creature. “Why are you trying to hurt this… fox?”
“That’s none of your business, little squid! Now help me catch it!”
“N-no!”
“What?”
“B-back off!” Braid holds her blaster at the black hairy thing. He snorts. “A paint gun isn’t going to help you fight The Devil!”
LUIGI
“M-M-M-Mario…?” Luigi stammers, wandering through the dark castle. “I’m-a scared…”
There’s cackling behind him. He whips around, waving his flashlight into the dark. Nothing. More to his left. He’s shaking so bad his flashlight won’t even remotely stay in the same place. He feels breathing down his neck. He whirls around, and there’s a Boo. “WAAAH!!!” The Boo cackles.
Then is abruptly replaced by a pink ball. Luigi looks down at it. It’s just a round pink ball, wearing red shoes and with small eyes a full mouth. It swallows, and burps. Luigi steps back. The pink ball cries out, “Poyo!” Luigi screams and runs.
He’s soon across the castle from the pink thing. He takes a moment to catch his breath, and when he looks up, there’s a small army of Shy Guys. He screams again, only to hear something like the sound of a vacuum cleaner, and sees every Shy Guy gone. The pink ball gulps. “Poyo!”
“MAAAAAMAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!” Luigi takes off screaming once again. In every room the pink ball returns and sends Luigi screaming off in another direction.
Finally, he runs back into the main room of the castle and rattles the door. Pounds the door. Throws fireballs at it. Its sealed perfectly. Behind him he hears it again.
“Poyo!”
Luigi, shaking as though he’s on a sugar rush, slowly turns around. There it is again. The little pink ball, staring at him in the dark. He grabs his flashlight and shakily points it at the pink ball, only to find it gone. Then he hears the vacuuming sound again, and cries in terror as the pink ball sucks him in.
FLOWEY
RESET.
RESET.
RESET.
Why aren’t you listening?!?!?! Flowey hurls his menu screen into a wall. The second he’d arrived here, he’d thought the solution simple- RESET back to the Underground and stop this from happening. But no. The dang thing isn’t working. Well, at the very least, in case someone manages to kill him here... A small four-pointed star appears in front of him. He taps on it, pulls up his file, and hits SAVE. He breathes in a sort of relief. At least that still works. He’s not going to take any chances.
He surveys the area. It looks like a giant gray forest. No, wait… that’s a single flower. It’s like a land of massive plant life. He can think of no place like it in the Underground.
“*Ugh… unless I got shrunk or something. That’d be dumb.” He whips around and glares up. “*Don’t tell me I SHRUNK. You seriously out of ideas?! Guh.”
No point in wasting time. Flowey zips into the ground and searches the giant plant-life maze. The only thing that comes to his attention is a tree, a fallen one covered in cherry blossoms, the size of the vines and stalks. It looks to be half-dead and half bursting with life. Flowey reaches out a vine to touch the bark, moving from the living wood to the rotten. Something orange and glowing reaches up onto his vine. Instantly he recognizes it as malicious and severs the part off his vine. The orange stuff shrivels up. But in the distance, he sees more orange. A small army of strange looking bugs walk from the dark. They look something like gray beetles, but they’re covered in the orange gunk Flowey just got off himself. Their eyes are dead and glow orange inside. Flowey huffs. “Get out of my way.” He pulls up vines, some simply sharp and thorned, one holding a knife, another forming rings of white bullets. They keep coming, so Flowey attacks. Orange gunk spews everywhere as the bugs are taken down, tons at a time. Flowey is careful not to let it land on him, dodging the spewing orange. However, there’s hundreds. By the time he’s taken down a hundred, Flowey’s getting tired. He’s starting to get scratches. “You guys are gonna make me go back to my SAVE already! Geez!”
Suddenly, he feels rejuvenated. Like someone’s healing him. He hears a young voice, female and tired, calling something he can’t quite make out. But the voice sounds… so…
Chara?
NIA
“Oh my Architect, my head…” Nia rubs her head, shoving her ears back. It’s throbbing like that time Zeke accidentally hit her with a frying pan showing her how to cook. She sits up and finds herself on a bed in what looks like a little kid’s room- toys everywhere, a little locket on the shelf, and a nightlight. She rubs her eyes. “Now where the eff am I?” She gets down from the bed and steps directly on a toy horse.
She kicks it across the room, swearing all the worst cuss words she can think of. It bounces off the wall and hits her in the head. “Why does that hurt more than bloody monster attacks?!” She very carefully steps over to the door and looks in the main room. Staring into the mirror is a small black and blue imp covered in glowing blue runic symbols into its small layer of fur. Its hair is orange, and in the shape of a ponytail. She’s staring into the mirror. “Oh, you’re awake.” She turns around. “Hey, kitty-cat.” Her eyes are orange and red, and her smirk has a fang sticking out. Her hair is covering her left eye. Nia hisses. “Don’t call me that. Where’s your Driver?” She’s acting on the assumption the imp is a Blade- what else could it be? No species in Alrest looks like that.
The imp blinks. “My what.”
“Your Driver.”
“…I’m sorry, did you hit your head harder than I thought? There was a whole lotta red, it might’ve underestimated it-”
“Your… you should know what I mean, master? The person who woke you up?”
“…yup, you’re insane, kitty. What’s up with the ears, anyway? I got to explore a lot of the Light world, and I never saw anything like THAT.”
“Light world? Haven’t you ever heard of a Gormotti?! And stop calling me ‘kitty’! Maybe you’re the one who needs your bloody head checked!”
“I’m talking normally! You’re the one who’s talking nonsense and with that dumb accent!”
“I don’t have an accent!”
The imp badly mimics Nia’s accent. “Yah yu do!”
“I don’t talk anything like that! You talk weird! Your voice is the weirdly high-pitched one!” She puts on an extremely high-pitched voice. “You sound like this!”
“No I don’t!”
“Yes you do!”
“You’re the crazy one!”
“Yeah, well, you can cut the sh-” both then notice the small child watching their argument. It’s a small girl with straight eyes, slightly tan skin, a blue-purple striped shirt, a big head, and brown hair. She looks at each in turn. “Shhhhhoelace,” Nia finishes.
The imp says, “How about we don’t argue in front of the little kid?”
Nia nods. “Yah.” She stoops down to the kid, ignoring the imp saying, ‘see, you do talk funny!’. “Hey, kiddo. What’s your name?” The kid blankly stares at her. Then she reaches out little hands and starts patting Nia down. “HEY! What’re you doing?! Are you frisking me?” The kid nods. Nia stands back up and huffs. “Fine. If you’re not gonna talk, I’ll just call you Frisk.” Frisk is jumping up and down, with her hands up, like let me finish, I didn’t check all your pockets yet.Although it does sort of looks like give me upsies. Nia picks her up and shows her to the imp. “Introductions. Annoying imp, this is Frisk. Frisk, this imp is jerk.”
“Okay, I’m a Twili, not an imp. And second, my name’s Midna!”
“You didn’t say. And I’m Ni-”
“You say that like I care, kitty.”
“STOP CALLING ME-” Frisk jumps out of Nia’s hands and toddles off toward the door. Nia blinks. “Hey, wait, Frisky, where are you going?!”
Frisk walks out the door into a pit.
Dr. Eggman’s Log of Excellency- .exe experiment, entry 57.
Hopefully this is not my final entry.
My latest experiment has grown increasingly more hostile. It does not leave the stimulated Green Hills- though you may as well call it Red Hill, with what it’s done to the place. If I don’t find some way to contain .exe, it will never help me. In fact, it’s already starting to talk to me, asking me to play. I don’t respond, hoping it will stop, but it doesn’t.
All this experimentation with alternate worlds is leaving me exhausted. With all seven Chaos Emeralds in hand, perhaps I can finally create the Egg Pocket Zone and make my infinity army. Though if I can tame the subject, there will be no need. It is incredibly controlling of the world it lives in and can even scratch other ones.
Tomorrow I power on the machine.

The Devil is from Cuphead
Nia from Xenoblade 2, my favorite character
Frisk is the canon name of the kid from Undertale1
