The Professor approaches you.

"Well, my [boy or girl], you're finally 13. You can pick your starter. Depending on the Pokémon you choose, you will get different paths to choose. You may choose any Gen 1-3 Starter. What is your choice?"

This is where you come in! You get to decide on the starter. Just like most games, the Grass Gym is first. What starter do you choose. Depending on the starter you collectively choose, the decisions of certain battles, encounters, etc. will be different. Good luck and good teamwork!

Actually, Grass is most often the fourth gym. Kanto and Kalos have it as the 4th gym, and Alola has it as the 4th trial (which are close enough to gyms because there's eight of them). It's second in Paldea and Sinnoh, and in Unova it's first only if you chose Oshawott, making Galar the only region with Grass always as the first gym. (Sorry, I saw you said most games and I felt an irresistable urge to check and if needed correct that. Since all of the Switch games have Grass gyms meant to be fought early, though, I can see how you could think that and it's not exactly wrong if you mean "recent games" instead of "most games")

I say we choose Mudkip. We'll probably find a Fire or Flying or Poison or Ice or Bug type on the way.

Technically in Paldea you can pick your order, but Grass is best second…

Well I'm just thinking could we perhaps have a look at what other Pokemon live in this area? That way we would be able to pick which type a little better.
