gen 5 because. okay to be honest i just really like the art style and the soundtrack and the sheer amount of THINGS in it. also the characterization. oh god subtle characterization like how N and Colress are opposites of each other, how Ghetsis's arm seems to be injured in some way, the fact that the gym leaders act like actual people and have lives outside of fighting, it just makes me go ABSOLUTELY FERAL

Generation 5 was easily the peak of the series for me. And it followed Platinum and HGSS which were fantastic too.

It's really hard to choose a best gen because the best implementations of things i enjoy are scattered throughout.
Gen 3 has the most entertaining postgame content in the Battle Frontier
Gen 9 has the most enjoyable and accessible shiny hunting, as well as so many QoL mechanics that allow you to build teams without spending 100s of hours
Gen 6 is the last gen with that huge pokedex and mega evolution. We don't talk about Gen 7.

Listed from best to not best:
Gen 6 (X/Y) - Full 3D models! First main Pokémon game with ability to customize the player character. Started the new tradition of adding in battle gimmicks with mega evolution. Added in fairy type to balance out dragon type. First game to introduce riding Pokémon (although it was limited.) Roller blades > bike. Starters had a relative theme to their final evolutions (RPG classes knight, mage, rouge.) Never got Pokémon Z sadly. Team Blaze intentions are very dumb.
Gen 8 (S/S) - Most customizable player characters to date. Dynamaxing. Gym leaders and rivals were more fleshed out. Unique idea for gyms to be in stadiums. "Friend" rival number three. First game with a partly open world environment. First time national dex was limited due to "technical limitations." First official DLC. Camping with curry. Most of the story happens without the player.
Gen 7 (S/M) - Introduced regional types of Pokémon and full 3D world. Has the largest Pokédex out of all games so far. Most fleshed out evil group ever. Finally can ride Pokémon most anywhere, along with mini-game surfing. Starters have circus theming. Z-moves. Interesting AFK modes like Poké Pelago and Festival Plaza. No traditional gym leaders, but the kahuna's were basically the same. The second versions of this gen (Ultra Sun/Moon) had very limited additional content. Yet another friendly "rival."
Gen 5 (B/W)- First time TM's are reusable! The 2D sprite designs are top tier, along with dynamic animations and backgrounds. Better story than most other games. Seasons were added to the world. Although added in over a hundred new Pokémon, it hid most of the Pokédex until after the regional dex is "filled," which severely limits your choice for a playthrough sadly. Third fire/fighting final evolution starter in a row. 😓
Gen 9 (S/V) - Terastallize gimmick. Fully "open world" and "choose your own adventure," sorta. Past/Future regional Pokémon. Picnics with sandwiches and first major change to breeding. Starters had a band theme to them. Limited national dex again. Legendary Pokémon is the ride Pokémon. School theming, but didn't really capitalize on it. Have to craft
TMsTRs. DLC again. Worst official launch ever. Playing a child among teenagers and adults is weird. Forced school uniforms that severely limit customization.Gen 3 (R/S) - Added in more staple systems like abilities, natures, double battles, etc. New enemy group that's not Team Rocket. Bonus points for the plot being based of a true story. Too much water and super slow travel.
Gen 4 (D/P) - Finally separated moves into special and physical, and two of the starters evolved into duel types. Although yellow did it first, walking with your Pokémon is nice. Craziest difficulty curve ever. Same as Gen 5, it limits the number of available Pokémon until after the regional dex is filled, although older Pokémon are mixed in. The plot is questionable. This was the start of the friendly "rivals." Super slow save times.
Gen 2 (G/S) - Basically an expansion to Gen 1. Not only added in 100 new Pokémon, but also many systems that became game staples like breeding and shinies. It also "patched" the typing issues with psychic along with adding in steel and dark for balance. Go through Kanto again after completing Johto.
Gen 1 (R/B/Y) - The OG. Without it, none of this would exist.
