Personally I prefer Hitmonchan. The concept is communicated really well by the design. The English name is bizarre given that it is based on a boxer though.

From a Generation 1 point of view, neither because their Special Stat is atrocious with Hitmonchan being really bad because its attacks are Special. Hitmonlee is noticeably better given it actually learns Fighting moves but realistically… Fighting is just so bad in Generation 1 that I never use it. It's only useful in the very early game when you're facing Youngster Joey and his Rattata, hence Yellow version Mankey actually has a role to play but by the time you get to Saffron and the Fighting Dojo to unlock either of the Hitmon's, the need for a Fighting type is pretty much non-existent. You can argue there is Lorelai but the bulk of Ice Types in Gen 1 have solid Defense(outside of Jynx) and are part Water Type, meaning you can KO them with Electric types.

If I look at it from a current generation POV, then I'd probably go with Hitmonchan. Iron Fist ability with Fire Punch, Thunder Punch, Shadow Punch and Drain Punch makes for a pretty solid coverage combination. Yet the plethora of Fighting Type options I'd probably utilize neither of them if given the choice.

Hitmonlee has a better design, in my opinion.
