It's a good thing a discussion with this topic mentioned in it was revived, because just today I found out that the icon is ¶, also known as a pilcrow. It has many different uses, and due to the amount of them I won't explain any because I'll take far too long picking out relevant information, simplifying it, and fact-checking.
