Its a social deduction game there is a good team made up of townsfolk and outsiders and a bad team made up of minions and a demon
for the good team to win they need to find and execute the demon
for the evil team to win they need to stop that from happening
there are sometimes other win condition for each team
good team for example (alsaahir, cult leader (good), mayor, slayer)
bad team for example (saint, cult leader (evil), goblin, damsel)
I'll give 4 examples for each role 1 for TB (Trouble Brewing) 1 for S&V (Sects & Violets) 1 for BMR (Bad Moon Rising) and 1 for CE (Carousel Experimental)
townsfolk are good players that have helpful abilities
for example empath learns how many of their living neighbors are evil, Savant visits the storyteller each day and learns 2 pieces of information one true one false, Innkeeper each night choose 2 players they are safe from the demon but one of them is drunk till dusk, Engineer once per game you may change rather the minions or demon in play
next are the outsider they are good players with rules that hinder the good team
there is the saint if they are executed then evil wins, the mutant if they are "mad" about being an outsider they might be executed (mad is a condition were you have to act a certain way like if you think I'm evil you are mad that I'm evil or if you are saying your the savant you are mad about being the savant), the lunatic you think you are the demon but you really are not, the zealot you must vote for every nomination
next are the minions they are part of the evil team their purpose is to cause confusion and throw suspicion off the demon
spy each night you get to look at the grimoire (the grimoire is the thing that the storyteller holds that has all the roles of everybody in play and any effects that might be on them), Pit-Hag each night pick a player and a character if that character is not in play they become that character, Devil's advocate each night pick a player (can't be the same as last night) they can't die by execution today, boomdandy if you are executed all but 3 players die a 10 second countdown then begins the player with the most hands pointing to them is executed and dies.
next is the demon they are the head honcho of the evil team they are trying to make it to final three and successfully trick the good team into being suspicious of one another or blend in to the crowd and not look suspicious at all
the imp each night pick a person they die if you pick yourself one of your minions becomes the demon, the vortox each night pick a person they die all townsfolk information yield false info if no one is executed evil wins, po each night pick a person they die if you decided to pick no one the following night you can pick 3 people, legion majority of players are legion each night the storyteller choses who dies your vote only counts if good also voted.
another thing about clocktower is that death is not the end of your story when you die you get 1 dead vote that you can use for the rest of the game so use it carefully also you go to sleep this way there are also roles that want to die like ravenkeeper banshee and farmer
the game has a storyteller they know all they can't give you more than the information that you already recieved but they can help clearify any rules question that you may have rather it be general rules question or how specific characters interact with each other (which is called jinx's)
clocktower can be run with as little as 6 people (5+a storyteller) to 21 people (20 plus a storyteller)
well i forgot to mention the rules of travelers, fabled and lorics
travelers are for people who show up late or may have to leave early they may have one of these characters they also can be rather good or evil also instead of being executed they experience this thing called exile, unlike execution where a dead vote is used up if a dead person voted exile every can vote without punishment and you need a half majority to exile a traveller if you do they die I'll give 4 examples of travelers
deviant if you were funny today you can't die by exile, thief each night pick a person there vote counts negatively today, beggar you can only vote with ghost vote tokens you may beg another player to have their ghost vote token if they give it to you you learn their character and alignment, cracklejack each night pick a player they can't change character tonight a person changes to a different character each night
next is fabled these are storyteller roles that are to use to help the game run smoothly addressing issues that may arise here's 4 examples
angel if a new player dies today something bad might happen to the person who caused it, ferryman if you deem it to be the last day all dead people gain their dead votes back, sentinel there may be 1 more or less outsider in play, doomsayer a person may say doom and a person of their alignment dies
next is loric It's basically fabled if they were chaotic
the tor you don't know what your character is until after you die, storm catcher there is a storm caught character that all people know what it is and evil knows what player is it or if it is not in play that player can only die by execution, the zenomancer you may recieve a zenomancer quest if you complete this quest you may gain a piece of true information, big wig if you are nominated you must pick a player to defend you they have to be mad that you are good or they might die
