In his final message when he gives you the Lucario, he says I remember when that dark day fell over Galar and since he was there, that means he must have survived it, which is not likely they say it was a cataclysm meaning it … a lot of people

Galarians also survived the Darkest Day, otherwise there would be none to pass the tale (and I don't think AZ was the one who told it to the most people since he's not even Galarian) or to stop the destruction. You can see him being sick and weak in Z-A, which means that he can d1e from things other than time.
