Which attack did you use, in what game, against what Pokémon, and what level was your Pokémon?

You gave no information, so it's a bit hard ti help. (Also, if you're talking about a mobile game or TCG, you're supposed to use another category)

Another thing: If a super-effective attack deals no damage to a Pokemon that should have a disadvantage, I think there would be a little roll in the numbers or something that would cause the otherwise supereffective attack to fail.

it could be from the opposing pokemon having a type immunity (example: ghost cant hit normal), the move having a prerequisite (example: fake out can be used only on the first turn a pokemon is on the field), the pokemon is disobedient (from trading in a pokemon higher than your level limit allows), or just missing the opponent
