Attack text states 3 extra energy (on top of the 3 needed for attack) is needed to do 180 damage to a benched Pokémon, so 6 energy total. But it does this with only 3 energy attached.

Your opponent was probably playing the Charizard with the Burn Brightly ability, which causes fire energy to count as 2x.

Always double-check the board state as there is almost always an explanation for something not working as you expected.
