You know that as I reflect on my years of playing Yellow, I have more in common with Gary than I thought. His team on Yellow is Sandslash, Alakazam, Exeggutor, and then a Fire/Water/Electric trio whose composition is decided in the first two rival fights. If you lose your first rival fight, he evolves Eevee into Vaporeon. If you win and then skip the optional Route 22 fight, he does Flareon. If you win both, he does Jolteon. His alternatives are Magneton, Ninetales and Cloyster so whichever one he has for Eevee, the other two are his alternates.
The reason I'm like Gary(or w/e you name him… anyone miss that option?) is that I almost always go Sandshrew early on because I really like that Ground type(if I don't it's almost always Nidoqueen). I also almost always use Jolteon or Magneton because they are simply the best Electric Types over Pikachu(so what if he gets native Thunderbolt... They have like double the Special Attack(or more) along with way more Speed in Jolteon's case(25% Crit anyone?)). My favorite Pokémon is Vulpix, hence I always have Ninetales. I'd probably go Alakazam every time too because it hits like a truck but I don't use him because it requires Trade Evolving(which I can't do on a Yellow playthrough). Instead I usually use Mr.Mime(due to in-game Trade XP or Hypno because why not. I could also go Mew too hah). I've used Cloyster before because it's possible to get Shellder reasonably early via Glitch catch(why wait for a Super Rod when that's an option). Yet if I don't, I often use Lapras(same typing and available early via Glitch catch) or Vaporeon(an Eevolution that Gary can have). If Exeggutor didn't come so late, id strongly consider it but opt for either the regional starter in Venusaur(which Gary has on Red/Blue) or an underrated Bug in Parasect(Spore + Leech Life on Sabrina is surprisingly strong).
TLDR: He uses Pokémon id use on nearly every playthrough 🤣😇🙅
