Rival
Most rivals are really good at battles, just not to the point of beating the MC. And it doesn't prevent them from enjoying other things. Being a rival would mean I'm above average at battling, maybe even one of the top 5 best trainers in the region, just never capable of approaching the MC's level (and, likely due to my experience being an artist, that sounds really good). And I get a free guaranteed best friend (and possibly even multiple friends!) and an epic journey. Zero downsides.
