Ash was a bad trainer for his Torterra.
But I voted Staraptor because his anime appearances were one reason it's my favourite Pokémon (well, with Staravia).

It's well-established that the twerp's battle style is to hit hard and hit fast. He prioritises speed above most else.
His Turtwig was quite fast for a lil' cute turtle. But after evolving into Grotle and gaining a lot of weight, Grotle lost the ability to really move, and the twerp had no idea how to handle it. Paul's Torterra coached Grotle on the technique of being a reactionary defensive battler relying on defence instead of speed, and Ash pledged to train Grotle in a way that best suits Grotle's unique strengths, which would be unique versus Ash's usual battling style.
And then that all went out the window once Ash had Grotle (and Torterra) learn Rock Climb, which is basically treated as Quick Attack but for large Pokémon. With Rock Climb, Torterra didn't win a single battle after evolving except against, like, Team Rocket, and it kept getting bonked while trying to move fast with Rock Climb. Rock Climb completely went against Ash's pledge to play to Grotle and Torterra's strengths, and it's not at all like how Paul's Torterra functions. Ash really, really tried to make Torterra into something that it's not, and Torterra suffered for it.2 -

This in a nutshell. It's also why he deserves his Tobias beat down because he stubbornly refused to adapt to his Pokemon's strength.
As for me, I'm partial to Gliscor.
