Clefable Metronome using extra damage moves that it shouldn't

So I was playing with a Metang/Orthworm deck I made. I played against a user that was playing a Clefable deck. Towards the end of the game, I evolved my Metang into Metagross which has "Metallic Hammer." It does 150+ and reads; "You may discard 3 steel Energy from this Pokemon and have this attack do 150 more damage." Somehow, the opposing Clefable was able to use the extra damage against me without having to discard 3 steel energy which ended up costing me the game. Is this a bug or is this normal? It doesn't feel like that's how it should work.

No, it's not a bug... it's working exactly as the official ruling says. When Clefable copies "Metallic Hammer" they can choose to do the extra damage without discard energies, period.

The only catch is, if Clefable has any Metal or Rainbow-like Energies attached, they must discard up to 3 of them. But in your scenario your opponent likely had no Metal Energies attached, so they did the extra damage without discarding a single thing.

Thank you for the reply. That mechanic seems off to me. As you said, the Clefable only had psychic energy, yet was still able to use the extra damage without discarding steel energy. That seems a little unfair in my opinion. Oh well. Thanks again for clarifying.

No problem... I agree that this rule seems a bit off and creates lot of confusion... but well, that's the rules. And btw it's the same for Slowking's Seek Inspiration attack.
