    There were many variations of the rumours. A big reason for it was the lack of centralised online spaces with which to co-ordinate and test them. Some stuff would be consistent (especially if it was actually in the game, like MissingNo. and the Mew glitch) but others would be unique to one country, region, or even one school.

    But I think every school had that kid whose dad/uncle/older brother/cousin/"friend who goes to a different school" who worked (or knew someone who worked) at Nintendo. You could not question that kid. Everything they said might as well have been a press release from Nintendo themselves as far as the playground was concerned.

    We actually had a legitimate Mew distribution event not too far from where we lived, so a few of us had legitimate Mews (myself included). For that reason, most of our school rumours didn't revolve around Mew, because we already knew the real story on how to get one.
