Misty's Pokemon are strong Specially but weak Physically(aka just like Psychic types). Although they did buff the Staryu line from Generation 1 by giving it Recover earlier(level 15 is kind of nuts compared to 29(i think… been awhile) in Red/Blue/Yellow). As such, a Pokemon like Mankey could take down Staryu quite well with Karate Chop. It's her ace that is the sticking point, hence Paralysis and reducing its accuracy can win you the fight. Yet this is the price you pay for taking Charmander as opposed to Bulbasaur or Squirtle. Bulbasaur has Leech Seed + type advantage while Squirtle learns Bite or a Dark Type move along with resisting her Water attacks. Paras + Butterfree are solid options given they have Status moves and if you need a Grass type, head up Route 24 and catch an Oddish(Fire Red) or Bellsprout(Leaf Green) in the Grass. Training it up though is a challenge because there aren't Water, Rock or Ground types to train against save for Sandshrew on Route 4(Leaf Green only).

I don't choose my Pokémon based on what will be best
I choose them based on what I like most
I would never choose Squirtle or Venusaur because I don't have any liking for them
The only times I will be choosing a Pokémon for strategy is when I get a Jynx (I still need to know where Poliwag's location is) and Jolteon (I like Flareon more)
Other than that I try to stick with Pokémon I have some sort of liking for
