Honestly its more worth it to get some sort of PC than a newer console considering the library on PC, or at least one of those handheld PCs like the Steam deck if you want the console feel. Most of the big exclusives are on PC anyways plus there is more freedom with PC for no paid online and a lot of fan content for the games.

If you insist on buying a newer system go with the Xbox Series X, has the largest library out of all of them.

If he had a Sega Genesis and was likely a Sega person, he probably went to Sega Saturn. Anyways… peruses Sega Genesis list… Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force, Phantasy Star(IV was a big one), Shadowrun… eh nothing else really comes to mind that might match what you said above. As for NES, pretty much what I already noted above but there's also Shadowgate. Only mention it since you mentioned Shadow as a potential key word. Nothing else really comes to mind or matches what you were describing.

Also, if I were you, start saving some $$$ and get a PS6 when it comes out next year(don't expect it in 2026, hence 2027 release). It'll be insanely pricey compared to the old PS4 and PS5 but I'm hearing really good things about it and ought to be competitively priced next to the PS5 Pro. Not sure what impact the current RAM-gate issue plaguing personal PC right now will have but the PS6 is going to take a pretty nice leap in performance over its predecessor. Alternatively, you could put that $$$ towards a Switch 2 since by 2027, the Switch 2 library should be pretty good(ditto the Switch 1 library that you can play). It's just that by 2027 or a year from now, you'll be paying $450-500(or more) for a 3-year old console that came out in mid 2025(should have been out at the end of 2023 or early 2024 but I digress).

@Lonestar85 & @MonstaDash thank you! All good info for me to think about. I appreciate it. If and when I do get something, I'll let you know.

Shadowrun sounds familiar... Hmmmm and yes, the others I may have played. My uncle also gave us his collection of the Sega Genesis games so we had a lot of fun going through them all as kids & playing the NES. Ahhh memories!

Have you seen RAM prices these days? Yeah… PC costs have gone up by a good chunk as a result of that. I got a new desktop a year ago and 32 GB RAM kits are a good 2-3 times what they were 6 months ago and 64 GB kits… roughly the same increase or higher. Graphics Card prices, obscenely high as they are, are going to go up because of the RAM. What impact, if any, it has on Consoles remains to be seen but if you're claiming PC is cheaper than console, I got news for you: It hasn't been cheaper for a long time now. Handhelds are a nice compromise, hence why I got a Switch 2(and the fact my brother back east got one for my nieces).

Just in case anyone was curious on PC specs: Zen 5(9700x) + RDNA4(9070xt), 2TB SSD, 32 GB RAM on a cheap B850 Motherboard. Got it on sale at the time for ~$2k and got a new 4k Monitor for $800(could have gotten another $100 off if I had looked on Black Friday but missed it… my fault). This replaced an Intel 1st Generation i7 Desktop from 2010 so… overdue? Note: Intel is on 15th Gen now so yeah its been awhile lol.

Yeah the ram prices right now are insane but you can still find some prebuilds at like Costco for a reasonable price and the handheld PCs seem to be unaffected by the price increases. I have been using a 2K monitor and it isnt that worth it to invest in 4K because the level of detail with 2K is perfectly fine with a 27 inch monitor. I also never claimed gaming was cheaper on PC, just said it was better. Then again I am very much heavily invested in gaming and dished out 4 grand for my ultimate gaming rig, but it can be done for like 1,500$ if you know what you really need and/or are good at finding deals.

From what I heard with Sony and MS developing new consoles it is hurting them as well, but honestly they pumped out such little games for the PS5 and Xbox Series it makes me question why they are making a new console at all. Steam is also being hit hard as their cheap Steam Box is becoming more expensive to make.

But yeah your computer is nice, not really an overdue upgrade considering how much an older rig can play on PC. May your new computer last you until 2040 as well as mine.

I got a new rig more out of necessity. It was so old that I couldn't use modern hardware on it(SSD's(M2 kind, not SATA), Modern GPU's since Motherboard was DDR3 RAM(I forget the speed or amount… I think it was 8 GB of 1066 but I could be wrong) + PCie 2.0… ← modern GPU's are PCie 5.0 so it was a bottleneck, even if modern hardware has yet to saturate PCIe 3.0, much less 4.0 and they're now on PCie 5.0). I did the cost analysis on PCPartpicker and compared it to a prebuilt from various sites(I didn't really care on brand but moreso on cost) and got it for ~$1800 + tax(which put it to ~$2k). CPU was roughly 350, GPU 800, RAM + MB + SSD was like 350 and then case + PSU + CPU cooler all came around 300 so it felt like a decent deal.

The 4k Monitor was an impulse splurge since I was going from an old 1080 that still functioned but wanted to upgrade since I watch TV + Movies on my PC(partly why the old Desktop lasted as long as it did because it had an optical drive for DVD's and ran OLD games). The visuals on the Monitor are just stunning and while the average person can't tell the difference between 2K and 4K, I have the option of running it in 2K if I wanted to. Also, I've seen those pre-builts at Costco. Many of them use 5060's… which aren't even worth the Silicon they were made on. I mean if you have nothing, then obviously its better but 60 series has really sucked. The last real quality 60 card was the 1060 but I'm being pretty picky. Even 70 series isn't really worth it since its basically a 60 series card masquerading as a 70 series card at 80 series price.

The old games I used to play on it were Escape Velocity Nova(underrated game that got its start on Mac… permitted you to play the first two titles on its engine too so it was like having three games in one), Empire at War(aka the game that modders on Steam have kept alive for ~20 years… I really don't feel like rebuying a game I used to own on Steam but I may break down and do it) and Command&Conquer(1 and 2 and I know the remaster is on Steam which again I may break down and do). Thing is while PC does have way more options than Console, the cost of the hardware is ultimately what decides things and console has always held the edge there.

I mean if the game is on GOG its worth rebuying and buying a Steam deck, basically a watered down handheld Linux box, is about the same price as like an Xbox Series X and PS5.

Valve is coming out with new hardware to replace the Steam Deck in the coming weeks/months. I don’t know how long the wait will be but they intend it to be a pretty big improvement. Also if I’m going to rebuy a game, I don’t mind it being on Steam. Even at $20, they’re solid games and I’d rather reward Petroglyph/Westwood for making these games in the first place. If I can get them on sale, all the better. Just waiting until I got some disposable cash to throw around but I don’t since I spent a bit this past Xmas and the year before.

Yeah honestly the only reason to go with GOG is because its DRM free and I am definitely looking forward to the new hardware as well.
