Misty Energy does not work right

I was in a match a minute ago and my rival use a Grenina Ex the Tera Fighting, his second attack

Mirage Barrage Discard 2 Energy from this Pokémon. This attack does 120 damage to 2 of your opponent's Pokémon. 

(Don't apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon.)

I had a Psyduck on my bench with a Misty Energy atached and the attack deal damage to it even do, is not damage, is discribe as an effect.

Is that normal for it to do that? Please guide me if am wrong. Thanks

Mirrage barrage says it does "damage." Damage is damage, even if it's described with text on the card.

Mist energy only protects from damage placed in the form of "damage counters.:
