How does pathfinding work with your partner pokemon in S/V?

I was messing around with chien-pao and realized that whenever I turned around chien-pao would always move to be behind me. Other pokemon don't follow this, meowscarada stays behind me, but doesn't follow as closely and paldean wooper stands in front of me. Just wondering if any one had any insight into this?
