Pinsir TWM Slow Crunch treated as a special condition, not an effect

Just got this deck today, but in the very first match I was playing against an Arcanine ex deck. I used slow crunch on the Growlithe, and then on the opponent's turn, they evolved into Arcanine. The slow crunch did not KO on their turn. Testing in the deck editor also leads me to believe that it is treated as a special condition as, when a slow crunched Pokemon switches or retreats to the bench, slow crunch does not KO the newly benched Pokemon on the end of the turn. As the wording says "defending Pokemon", this leads me to believe that whatever 'mon took the slow crunch should get KOed. For example, evolving would not remove this effect as it continues to be the same Pokemon, just in its evolved state. The only way to remove this effect should be something like Professor Turo's scenario, which removes the Pokemon from play entirely, and therefore cancels all effects. I also wanted to mention that cards like Thorton LOR should keep this slow crunch effect as well.
