I'm looking for those of us that their first game was Black 2 or White 2. Have you replayed it recently? What are the most nostalgia induced moments for you? Do you know it is the worst Pokemon game? Which starter did you choose first? Which starter do you play with now? Would you ever gift someone the game?

What an odd entry point for the franchise. Was it simply the latest game out when you started, or did you receive it as a gift?

The game is very explicitly a sequel, and though it does have its own self-contained narrative, it feels like you would have been missing half the context. Did you go back and play BW afterwards?

Do you know it is the worst Pokemon game?

I wouldn't consider it the worst Pokémon game. In fact it is a contender for best game in the series for many.

Worst selling, perhaps, but the Pokémon franchise was in a strange spot. Despite doing what I consider to be their best work during that era, the fanbase didn't seem to agree.

I think that is partly due to the all new Pokédex, but it was also a case of bad timing.

Original fans had mostly aged out and had not quite reached prime nostalgia pandering age. That would come with the 3DS, XY and "OMG Charizard in 3D, best game eva!!!" Those kids introduced in gen 3 were probably in high school and "too old for kids stuff".

I am not sure how gen 4 kids perceived gen 5, as I had no friends or family of that generation to ask.

Personally I preferred BW, but it is a great game in its own right and one of my favourites. I recently finished a playthrough of Black, so I might play Black 2 soon.

My first Pokémon game was Black 2/White 2 too! I haven't replayed it recently, but I remember the excitement of the Unova region and the new Pokémon. The biggest nostalgia moment for me was the post-game storyline with Kyurem and the Legendary battles. Some people say it's the worst because of its lack of new Pokémon and the somewhat linear story, but I think it still has charm.

I picked Tepig as my first starter, and now I usually go with Snivy. I’d definitely gift Black 2/White 2 to a fellow Pokémon fan—they're great games for newcomers to the series too!

Black 2 & White 2 were the last games of the 2D generation and I feel perspective is good for fans. Me being a fan and only playing the games years after when the Switch was already out and people were hype for Scarlet & Violet, I feel kind of lucky. That I got the best experience but I want to thank Jeffers on giving me a little experience on what nostalgia a player might feel.

So you played BW2 just before SV released as your first Pokémon game? I can understand choosing a more modern 2D game as an entry point, and I think gen 5 is a good place to start, but again, didn't the '2' in the title make you want to play BW, instead?

We all have our own entry point for any franchise. Not everyone needed to (or could) have started during Pokémania. Not everyone has to start with Red and Blue. A game cannot be sustained by old heads forever. It needs new blood.

I think a lot of fans of my generation have a very valuable perspective on the franchise, having seen its inception and development over the decades.

But new fans bring new perspectives. I don't think any franchise should chase new trends and the dreaded "wider audience" to the point of losing their core identity and what made them great in the first place, but equally you do not want a franchise to stagnate placating a dwindling fanbase of stubborn, aging fans.

I don't think anyone should feel ashamed for having any game as their first game. Even if it's Sword and Shield. (I am so sorry. Don't worry, it gets better.) We all find our own way.

I just found BW2 to be a very unusual starting point and wondered how you got there.
