Opponent's TM devo made me discard a benched Pokemon

Just had a game where my opponent used TM devo to make me pick up a pidgeot ex and noctowl, and for some reason the game made me choose one of my benched pokemon to discard (down to 4).

My opponent's previous action in the turn was to lost vacuum area zero, if that detail might be helpful in determining the cause of it.

@Mod_Bee Unfortunately I didn't take a screenshot. There aren't too many more details to add that seem relevant to me. I had Noctowl, Rare Candied Pidgeot ex, 2 Bouffalant, and 2 Terapagos ex in play (Terapagos ex active with a Double Turbo Energy attached) I think. My opponent was playing either a Gardevoir ex deck, or a Froslass (Freezing Shroud) deck. It was one of the two games I played yesterday, the first one I think, if you have a way of looking up gamelogs.

I suppose describing the sequence of events: My opponent played Lost Vacuum, getting rid of my Area Zero Underdepths, forcing me to discard 3 benched Pokemon (down to 5). They then used the "Devolution" attack on Technical Machine: Devolution. The game automatically returned the Pidgeot ex to my hand, then prompted me to choose a benched Pokemon to discard. I chose Bouffalant bringing me down to 4 benched Pokemon. The game then automatically returned the Noctowl to my hand, and the game proceeded normally otherwise from that point onward.
